Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale on Wednesday batted for the extension of reservation (at present 49.5%) by 25% to accommodate economically backward people from the upper castes.

"There is a demand to provide reservation from every caste. This can be achieved by providing 25% reservation in jobs and education to financially poor families of upper castes, while remaining 25% could be open for all categories," Athawale said and hastened to add that it was his personal suggestion.

Athawale, a prominent Dalit leader, was in the city to review his department's activities and attend party programmes. He claimed that he would suggest changes to the existing reservation system to the Centre. Besides urging the state to increase monthly pension to at least Rs 1,000 for the aged persons, he wanted it to popularise inter-caste marriages which, he said, could end casteism in society. Athawale expressed satisfaction over the performance of Karnataka government in reaching out to backward communities.
