The Bus Prayanikara Vedike (bus travellers association) has vehemently opposed the steel flyover saying the entire project has been handled illegally and undemocratically.

The vedike has rather suggested induction of more buses to reduce dependence on private vehicles. In a press release, convener of the vedike Vinay Srinivasa said the government did not bother to get the view of the Metropolitan Planning Committee (MPC), which is a constitutional committee. Further, the land use has been changed overlooking the provisions of Karnataka Town and Country Planning Act.

The project violates the Karnataka Preservation of Trees Act as 800 trees will be uprooted.
"Our transport planning, which revolves around getting people to the airport, reeks of elitism.

Majestic bus station has 10 lakh visitors a day. How come there are no efforts to improve access to Majestic, so that buses can move in and out faster?"

He has also questioned how Rs 100 crore has been earmarked for the demolition of the underpass and overpass built precisely for the same reason as the steel flyover.

Poor design

"These structures had sprung up when BBMP was pushed to ensure a hassle-free commute to KIA. If the BDA overpass was glaring in its poor design, the magic box has been ridiculed by architects and motorists alike. Each of these structures cost about Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 4 crore to build. Widening and relaying the road cost the palike about Rs 250 crore. Now, all of these will be laid to waste," said Srinivasa.

He said investing on mass transport, that is BMTC and suburban rail, and strengthening pedestrian facilities would offer more lasting and sustainable solutions to mobility issues.

More buses sought

Srinivasa recalled how the state government turned down the vedike's demand for an investment of Rs 1,300 crore into BMTC for more buses, bus-shelters at all the 8,000-odd bus-stops, affordable bus-fares and improving the working conditions of BMTC staff.

"We were told that there weren't enough funds. How are we spending Rs 1,791 crore on a single flyover project, that too only to ease travel to those going to the airport?"
