The Bangalore Rail Metro Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), which completes five years of commercial operations on Thursday, has seen a ridership of more than seven crore so far.
With this, the BMRCL has generated revenues of Rs 122 crore only from ticket fares. During the first 10 days from 20 October, 2011, there was a ridership of 63,000 with revenue of Rs 1.07 crore. During the financial year of 2011-12, the revenue touched 6.17 crore with a total ridership of 41 lakh. During this period only MG Road to Baiyappanahalli Metro stations were under operational.
The 2012-13 as well as 2013-14 financial years registered revenues of Rs 18.56 crore with ridership of 1.38 crore. There was no significant improvement in the ridership as Reach-3 was ready for public use only in March 2014. There was considerable increase in ridership (2.83 crore) in the financial years of 2014-15 and 2015-16 with the opening of Reach-3.
The situation was no different in the present financial year as the total ridership is 2.47 crore with revenue of more than Rs 50 crore.
