Thirty-five junctions that see substantial traffic but do not have signals will get them by the end of this year.

Traffic junctions in Bengaluru's IT hub and on roads that link the national highways will get the signals. Police hope the measure will help reduce congestion, regulate traffic and withdraw additional men from these junctions.

Junctions in Yelahanka, Malleswaram, Hebbal, Vijayanagar, Ashoknagar, Halasuru, Indiranagar, KR Puram, Banaswadi, Rajajinagar, Peenya, Jalahalli, Chamarajpet, Jayanagar, Banashankari, Madiwala, Adugodi, Mico Layout, Whitefield, Hulimavu, Upparpet, Kengeri and Byatarayanapura will get the signals.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic)RHithendra told DH, "Tender has been floated and the work will begin in the first week of November. We have written to Bescom and the BBMP seeking permission for road-cutting. The signals will be functional by December-end."

The signals will be installed under the B-Trac project, with each of them costing Rs 35 lakh. All the signals will have pan, tilt and zoom cameras for effective traffic regulation, he added.

The junctions were chosen after a study. "The study showed that these junctions are congested as they see higher vehicular density, report more traffic violations and therefore need more men for regulation. It takes more than three minutes to get past an intersection. Hence, it was decided to have signals there for streamlining traffic," a senior officer involved in the study said.

An traffic planning officer said that having the signals would help reduce congestion. "The waiting period at each of the four directions will be 60 seconds," he added. The chosen junctions are those where more than three roads merge. Eight roads merge at Mother Diary junction in Yelahanka and five roads merge at 19th main Diacon junction in Malles-waram, MS Palya junction in Hebbal and P&T junction in Vijayanagar.Thirty-five junctions that see substantial traffic but do not have signals will get them by the end of this year.
