Bengaluru Development Minister K J George has suggested to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to explore the possibility of outsourcing tax collection so that more revenue could be generated.
At a meeting held on Tuesday, George said the number of properties in the city has increased compared to last year and hence, concerted efforts should be made to collect tax from them.
BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad told the minister that there are about 18. 5 lakh properties in the city and BBMP has collected Rs 1,960 crore, including arrears from 15.14 lakh properties last year.
He said 20,000 defaulters owe more than Rs 965 crore in property tax. George said, "There is a huge potential for revenue through advertisement. But due to leakage, the Palike is not getting its due." In this regard, he directed the Palike officials to file criminal cases against those putting up unauthorised hoardings in the city.
In the meeting, the Palike officials said that film posters are defacing the city and are not paying anything to the civic body. The minister advised the BBMP to identify places exclusively for Kannada film posters at concessional rates and for political parties.
George asked the BBMP to encourage more flexes and ban paper posters in order to minimise defacement of public property. He said Prahari task force should be vigilant at night to book offenders, especially the paying guest accommodation owners who put up posters at public places and trace out the printers who print such posters.
Prasad told the minister that BBMP had raised a demand notice for 5,427 advertisers to collect Rs 321 crore from them. Mayor G Padmavathi, Deputy Mayor Ananda, Congress leader in BBMP R S Satyanarayana and Additional Chief Secretary Mahendra Jain were present in the meeting.
